2013-2014

The Faculty Mentor Program (FMP) is proud to announce for its third year that the Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work will be joining the program, in addition to the Colleges of Arts & Sciences and Engineering & Computing. The FMP will be partnering with the Division of Research to bring new workshops and speakers on topics ranging from grantwriting and research to publishing and summer planning, as well as the popular networking lunches at the Faculty Club on October 9, 2013 and January 14, 2014.

The well-received University of Michigan CRLT (Center for Research on Learning and Teaching) Theatre group will return again in Spring 2014 with a brand new performance called No Offense. The performance centers on the personal and professional dynamics that occur in a lab setting, and the behaviors that can negatively affect faculty and students, in particular the behaviors that might undermine the success of women in the STEM fields and what is at stake for all.

A variety of mentoring workshops and events were held to assist mentor pairs in achieving a successful relationship. Mentees (new assistant professors) were matched with mentors (established associate or full professors) from different departments who shared research interests or disciplinary demands.

Workshop materials, activities and strategies were derived from academic research on faculty mentoring from successful faculty mentor programs at other universities, including UCLA and University of Michigan.

LAUNCH committees provide support and guidance to new junior faculty as they begin their careers. Committees meet with the new faculty member from the time of hire until the end of the first year. The committee focuses on essential topics such as lab space, equipment and computing resources, funding, lab personnel, integration into the university, teaching, service and mentoring plans for the pre-tenure review period. Committees are typically composed of the faculty member’s department chair, two senior faculty (one in the person’s field inside the department and one in a related field outside the department), a division of research representative and a STRIDE (ADVANCE) committee member.

Kathie Olsen, Founder and Managing Director, ScienceWorks, Former Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer, National Science Foundation, will speak on grant-writing skills and grantsmanship knowledge needed to prepare better grant applications. This workshop will provide participants with knowledge of the federal research funding environment, with emphasis on the National Science Foundation and its funding priorities, opportunities, review processes, and selection criteria. Suggestions for preparation of pre-proposals and proposals will be shared. Special attention will be given to career awards.

Team Science is a popular phrase that refers to "large-scale, team-based research initiatives to address complex and multifaceted problems that require cross-disciplinary collaboration." This multidisciplinary approach acknowledges that solutions to the most pressing problems facing our world today require researchers from widely diverse backgrounds to work across the boundaries created by disciplinary silos. However, this is often not an easy task because of cultural barriers in academia, and constraints placed on these teams by various forces. CRLT No Offense!

Centering on the relationship between advisor and advisee in a lab setting, the performance of No Offense and accompanying facilitated dialogue will encourage session attendees to confronts various questions. 

This performance centers on the relationship between advisor and advisee in a lab setting. How are women and men affected by gender bias-- even when they are not themselves the direct target of biased behavior? How can bystanders productively intervene when they witness or become aware of biased behavior? What responsibilities does one have in responding to reports of problematic behavior?

The CRLT Players are visiting FIU with their acclaimed production of No Offense. They create research-based performances that examine current issues in higher education. Using a range of theatrical techniques, their performances engage faculty, graduate students and university administrators in critical reflection and dialogue.
