Established in 2016 by Provost Kenneth G. Furton, the FIU ADVANCE Office aimed to achieve and sustain faculty professional development to enhance FIU's academic excellence. FIU ADVANCE developed and managed a wide range of programs to promote faculty hiring, promotion, and retention using evidence-based "best practices," through workshops and trainings, to improve faculty mentoring, interdisciplinary networking, and a sense of belonging.

Other activities included strategic planning for policy analysis and development, and other initiatives that supported an inclusive workplace. FIU ADVANCE was funded from 2016-2023 by FIU and a National Science Foundation ADVANCE Institutional Transformation grant. It aimed to increase, retain and promote faculty excellence at FIU.

Associate Provost

History

FIU ADVANCE was supported from 2016-2023 by FIU and a five-year $3.2 million Institutional Transformation grant from the National Science Foundation. FIU ADVANCE developed and offered a wide range of programs to promote the use of evidence-based best practices for faculty to use when evaluating job candidates, and when making other evaluative judgments such as tenure and promotion decisions. All workshops were facilitated by faculty, for faculty.

Our programming and activities were designed to create, through the process of intervention and subsequent diffusion, a social system that results in all faculty feeling encouraged and supported in their careers at FIU. We focused on behavioral change to yield impactful results and to create a more inclusive climate. Our efforts to produce institutional change were grounded in social science knowledge. We regularly reviewed the impact of programming for its effects on different constituencies, in order to better understand how change actually occurrs.

Our mission

Our mission was to help individuals and groups create institutional change through evidence-based education, including implementation, to ensure the safety and inclusion of all faculty.

Our vision

We upheld that the workplace should be a safe and inclusive place for all. Our focus on changing behaviors positively supported the institutional change needed to create a sense of belonging for everyone through education, training, and support for individuals and organizations.
